I have found that my experiences writing book reviews has taught me that I have much more ability than I had previously given myself credit and that for some of us it takes encouragement from others for us to recognize our own abilities. Most importantly, writing book reviews provided me with somewhat of an epiphany. I realized that having been a voracious reader my entire life, as well as having read hundreds of book reviews in publications such as the Philadelphia Inquirer, the New York Review of Books, and the New York Times Book Review, had given me an education and foundation of which I hadn’t even considered or been aware. So, while I appreciate the fact that one of my teachers/mentors in my MFA program has called me a “natural” when it comes to writing reviews, in many respects what I am is a well-seasoned literary citizen.
